Greg Scott: Artist Bio

Greg Scott has been painting and has been performing as a professional pianist/keyboardist for over 30 years and has been living in Houston Texas for nearly 30 years. He is one of eight children brought up by parents who strongly valued visual art, music, dance, and literature. Greg considers visual art and music to be forms of expression that are interchangeable. His father James was an English professor and has works published including a ground breaking book entitled “Djuana Barnes”. James Scott was also an illustration artist, and jazz pianist and saxophonist. Greg’s mother Pauline was an educator, a classical pianist, and an accomplished painter. The house he grew up in was always filled with creative energy as his brothers and sisters are all artistically inclined. Greg's (early years) close proximity to New York City allowed for many opportunities to study the works of influences which include Miro, Picasso, Dali, Pollock, Cezanne, Van Gogh, and Gillespie first hand at many venues. His paintings have also been influenced by musical artists including McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, and Cecil Taylor. Greg has taken a variety of art courses, has a BBA in Accounting from the University of Houston, and considers himself to be predominantly self-taught as an artist. His musical education includes private studies with European classical pianist Lester Taylor and jazz studies with John Mehegan.

Recent highlights of Greg’s career include two paintings accepted into the Lawndale Arts Big Show in 2008: his first time submitting work for the annual juried exhibit. Recent events and exhibits this year include Artcetera, ICART, Artopia, Arts on the Avenue, the 5^th Annual Winter Street Exhibit, Galleria Lazarra exhibit, The Doshi House exhibit and monthly second Saturday open studios at Winter Street Studios. Greg is also active as a live performance painter working with Bassist and Composer Thomas Helton on three recent occasions that included performances at Diverseworks, Trinity Episcopal Church, and Avant Garden to the improvisational compositions of Mr. Helton. Charitable artistic involvement include the Artista Artcetura event to benefit Leukemia, a Spaulding for Foster Children fundraiser, Arts on the Avenue, and the MECA Fundraiser. Awards include best in abstract category for a student exhibit at the University of Bridgeport, and finalist at Masons.

Greg is especially thankful for the spiritual inspiration received from his wife Norma of twenty five years, his daughter Amanda, and son Nicholas.
